Cross-Cultural Spooky Stories submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2021, 12:32pm This book collects fairytales and folktales from around the world, focusing on stories with slightly spooky elements such as ghosts, monsters, and death. Each story is fairly brief, with the longest topping out at three or four pages, presented in straightforward prose that is accessible but a bit dry. Most of the stories’ character comes from local cultural elements that really give you a feel for the setting, and the stories that lack these markers of their origin tend to be somewhat bland by comparison. The illustrations add some surrealism to the text, especially as they usually present human figures with slight distortions, with icons appearing on every page to indicate broad settings. This collection’s strength lies in its cultural variety, and though it is predictably Eurocentric, the range of stories makes for an interesting experience.
