England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women's suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery who steers Britain's politics at the Queen's command. Her challenge: not to give in to the powerful attraction she can't deny for the man who opposes everything she stands for.

not great submitted by bec on July 11, 2020, 1:03pm I was excited for this book, but I found while reading that its substance doesn't really match the summary. The heroine wasn't particularly invested in women's suffrage and spends most of the book just angsting over the duke, who behaves like a jerk and never really proves he's got the capacity to do otherwise. There's very little historical research. In the end, it was a standard period romance with feminist window-dressing to help sell copies. I was disappointed.
Loved it! submitted by katierichter on May 18, 2022, 1:41pm I had no prior expectations for this book but once I started I could hardly put it down. I found it to be highly enjoyable and well written historical romance. The historical references were not overdone, but added substance to the story. I've read quite a few period romances and this one was a breath of fresh air. I don't think the heroine needed to be a staunch feminist herself to make the point of the novel and I disagree that it was "feminist window-dressing." I thought the plot was well planned and executed, the characters were vivid and the historical references were well researched and neatly intertwined with the plot.
