COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A Fresh Rom-Com submitted by Meginator on August 29, 2020, 1:42pm This is a charming friends-to-lovers romantic comedy that builds on the genre’s traditions while feeling fresh and emotionally honest, largely due to the main actors’ strong performances and convincing chemistry. The plot takes most of its broad cues from the standard rom-com playbook, but it’s the details and the intimate characterization that make this particular love story so engaging; instead of relying solely on situational humor (though it does have an excellent set-up), this film dives deep into the main couple’s insecurities and attraction to each other to make their relationship feel more tenuous and exploratory than predestined. It’s an excellent step forward for the genre, giving the film broader appeal to modern audiences and staking its place among the current rom-com renaissance. If you’ve been away from the genre for a while, this is an excellent place to dip your toes back into the water.
