From Ann Cleeves--bestselling and award-winning author of the Vera and Shetland series, both of which are hit TV shows--comes the first in a gripping new series. "Ann Cleeves is one of my favorite mystery writers."--Louise Penny In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father's funeral takes place. Once loved and cherished, the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back into the community he thought he had left behind, as deadly secrets hidden at its heart are revealed, and his past and present collide. An astonishing new novel told with compassion and searing insight, The Long Call will captivate fans of Vera and Shetland, as well as new readers.

Excellent submitted by Kgilroy on September 17, 2019, 8:37am I love all the Vera and Shetland books, so it is no great surprise that I love this one as well. It shows a maturity of writing and wonderful character development, but still manages to be a page-turner. Touches on a number of social issues that are not present in her other books.
Some may find it controversial

Good Mystery submitted by sdunav on June 11, 2021, 11:45am Really interesting mystery with nice portrayal of adults with disabilities, engaging protagonists, lots of atmosphere and feeling for location.

Excellent mystery submitted by vickik on July 28, 2022, 11:17am The Long Call is an outstanding mystery by Ann Cleeves, best known for the Shetland and Vera series. This is the beginning of a new series, featuring Matthew Venn, a gay police officer in the seaside resort area of North Devon, England. Matthew lives with his husband, Jonathan, who runs the community center. He has left the strict evangelical Christian community in which he grew up. As he is standing outside the church during his father's funeral, Matthew receives a call about a dead body found on the beach. During the investigation, Matthew has to come to terms with his past. Wonderful characters and setting.
