Fun YA sci-fi submitted by jaromatorio on July 24, 2020, 11:25am For some reason when I picked up ‘Wilder Girls’ I 1) did not realize it was YA fiction and 2) was under the impression that it was a sort of female version of ‘Lord of the Flies’ (wishful thinking for a book I’ve been dying to see written since 7th grade?)—and though it ended up being nothing like I expected, I really enjoyed this suspenseful, page-turning read!

Wilder Girls is set at an all-girls school on a secluded island somewhere in Maine where, after a mysterious disease called “the Tox” hits, the girls are quarantined and left largely to fend for themselves. “The Tox” kills all but two of the teachers and many of the girls, and those left alive are struck by “flare ups” that cause them to grow strange appendages, bleed from their eyes, and suffer a variety of other horrifying symptoms. When one of the girls goes mysteriously missing after a “flare up”, her two best friends embark on a dangerous quest to find their friend and uncover the truth about their school, “the Tox”, and the efforts to find a cure.

The suspense and build-up to the final reveal were fantastic, and I found myself staying up way past my bedtime to get to the bottom of things! And though I felt that the ending was a little rushed and didn’t give me the satisfying tied-up-with-a-bow conclusion that I was yearning for (it almost seemed as though the author left open the possibility for a sequel?!) I’m definitely impressed with this up-and-coming young (younger than me!! so cool!!) author, and am excited to read more from her in the future!
