COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Not irredeemable...but not good submitted by mrajraspn08 on July 28, 2019, 7:21pm I'm a big Hellboy fan, so I went into this with mixed feelings. The good: incorporates the comic lore very well--I was so excited to see some aspects brought to the screen. There were also two moments that I really enjoyed, and some of the dialogue was very good.
The neutral: the characters were very different. I especially had a hard time with Professor Broom, who was downright unlikeable, but it's been long enough since I read the comics that I can't say whether it's true to the original story. I will say that I did not like Alice in the comics and I thought she was one of the best parts of this movie. Every part she was in was, well, decent, anyway.
The bad: everything else. The makeup was bad, and the special effects looked like someone decided to do it after A (one) class. I even bought my brother in to watch a fight where the characters didn't even line up, and after a couple seconds, he was cringing. I honestly find it hard to believe they spent the budget they did. It's also incredibly gruesome--there's a series of scenes towards the end that just had me rolling my eyes because it was so over the top "look at me, I'm rated R!" And that was really the culmination of a movie ripe with that. The story was also interesting, but, honestly? It's been done better. Much better.
I'd give it a D, maybe a D+ if you ignore the previous movies and what could have been. I wanted to give it a C because I really appreciated the comic pulls, but I just really could not warrant it.

del Toro's Hellboy movies were better submitted by mellonir on August 16, 2019, 3:31am Yeah. it was a blood and gore fest. Ron Perlman makes a better Hellboy.
Miscasting abounds in this one. It tries to win you over with characters from the comic. but a weak script holds it back. No Liz Sherman, no Abe until the end, and he is implied in order to set up a sequel, which probably won't happen since a poor showing in theaters. Lobster Johnson could had more of a role. Hollywood Sucks when it comes to comic book characters.
Final Grade= C- , only because I like Milla Jovovich.

I'm sorry I can't give a Zero submitted by caburr47 on July 1, 2020, 8:41pm I really wanted to give this film a chance because I am a fan of Ian McShane. I honestly could only half pay attention to the film and couldn't finish it, I was so bored.

Series Reboot submitted by SaraP on August 7, 2022, 7:06am Rebooting the series was a good idea since the comics (and movies) hve such a big following. That said, this particular movies was never going to excite people like the original.
