"Growing up in Alabama, Renkl was a devoted reader, an explorer of riverbeds and red-dirt roads, and a fiercely loved daughter. Here, in brief essays, she traces a tender and honest portrait of her complicated parents--her exuberant, creative mother; her steady, supportive father--and of the bittersweet moments that accompany a child's transition to caregiver.-- Amazon.com

Beautiful book submitted by 21621031390949 on March 28, 2023, 3:54pm It took a little while for me to fully appreciate this book. It alternates between short essays about nature and essays that chronicle snapshots of the author’s life. At first I was annoyed by the nature essays, which seemed like interruptions. But eventually I realized their integral part in the whole work. Add in the gorgeous illustrations by the author’s brother, and it becomes a beautiful piece of art!

Renkl is an excellent writer. Her insight into human relations and emotions is deep and authentic. She strikes a chord in my heart. This is a book to be read slowly and savored.
