"The acclaimed author of Ordinary Grace crafts a powerful novel about an orphan's life-changing adventure traveling down America's great rivers during the Great Depression, seeking both a place to call home and a sense of purpose in a world sinking into despair"-- Provided by publisher.
1932, Minnesota. The Lincoln School is a pitiless place where hundreds of Native American children, forcibly separated from their parents, are sent to be educated. It is also home to an orphan named Odie O'Banion, a lively boy whose exploits earn him the superintendent's wrath. Forced to flee, he and his brother Albert, their best friend Mose, and a little girl named Emmy steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippi and a place to call their own. -- adapted from jacket

This submitted by Clown81 on August 31, 2019, 8:32pm Not tender.

Epic tale submitted by jhaberich on June 15, 2020, 5:02pm I really enjoyed this novel although the hardships endured by the characters made for difficult reading at times. I kept finding myself peeking ahead a few pages because I was worried what further troubles may befall them. Of course, this speaks to how engaging I found the book and how invested I became in the protagonist and the other characters.

Engaging story with just a hint of magic submitted by 3kidsgrimm on July 12, 2021, 2:52pm This is a wonderful adventure story with characters you root for immediately. The reader’s suspension of disbelief is easily done as even the bits that seem a bit out there are somehow completely fine in this we’ll done story telling.

Captivating submitted by Susan C on August 13, 2022, 5:13pm The story starts with characters that you can hope for. It kept me interested throughout the book.

Unforgettable Journey submitted by JJM.Deucher on August 7, 2023, 8:00am I've often struggled to read books not set in ~1990 to present, but this was a fast paced and curious historical fiction. Tackling issues of race, identity, belonging, and the lives of those living on the margins this story was a homerun.
