Midsummer's Eve, 1648, England is in the grip of civil war between renegade King and rebellious Parliament. The struggle reaches to every corner of the kingdom, even the remote Tidelands - the marshy landscape of the south coast. Alinor a descendant of wise women, crushed by poverty and superstition, waits in the graveyard under the full moon for a ghost who will declare her free from her abusive husband. Instead, she meets James, a young man on the run and shows him the secret ways across the treacherous marsh, not knowing that she is leading disaster into the heart of her life. Suspected of posessing dark secrets in a suspicious country, Alinor's ambition and determination marks her out from her neighbours. But this is the time of witch-mania, when it is dangerous for a woman to be different....

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Book submitted by Clown81 on August 31, 2019, 8:31pm What a name.

Good book submitted by Angela Argento on August 3, 2021, 7:45pm Greatly enjoyed. Loved main character.

First of the trilogy submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 29, 2023, 12:23pm An exciting read, "Tidelands" tells the story of an ordinary English family. It thus represents a divergence from author Philippa Gregory's usual historical novels about royals. This novel focuses on Alinor, a fisher and midwife on an English island. She is very poor and, she hopes, a widow as her missing husband abused her and their children. A chance encounter with a stranger changes the direction of her life and her children's lives.
Set during the English Civil War, in which Alinor's brother fights, the novel demonstrates how the culture, religious fervor and economics of that milieu harmed our main characters who are far from the royal court or Parliament. The small amount of supernatural in the novel, however, feels contrived, as if the author is trying to make this book into a fantasy novel. The plot, however, draws in the reader such that one cannot put down the book.
Caveat: this novel contains violence, including violence against women and accusations of witchcraft.
