COMMUNITY REVIEWS

From Someone Who Didn't Grow Up With These submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 7:11pm These classic holiday stories are hit-and-miss, but even the bad ones have a certain nostalgic charm that makes them worth watching at least once. The two films based on the Santa Claus legend are the best of the group, presenting surprisingly thorough origin stories for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and for Santa himself; the choppy stop-motion serves the stories well and gives them a childlike, almost dreamy quality that works well with the established mythology. “Frosty the Snowman” has charming character and set design, although the story is a bit odd and unrealistic (yes, even for a story about a talking snowman), and the adaptation of “Cricket on the Hearth” has its moments but ultimately relies on some troubling visual stereotyping and uneven storytelling that make it feel woefully outdated and overly simplistic. Frosty’s animation is solid, but “Cricket on the Hearth” suffers from bizarre cel-shading abnormalities and far too simplistic movement that makes it look unprofessional and cheap. “The Little Drummer Boy” is an unmitigated stop-motion disaster that I hated for all of the twenty-five minutes I was stuck with it and, like “Cricket on the Hearth,” feels tonally out of synch with the other three films. So, this is a mixed bag. As a lifelong Christmas-celebrating adult somehow encountering these classics for the first time, I was surprised by just how good “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” was and was vaguely disappointed by the rest; still, the good and benign trio holds up fairly well and I can understand why they are so beloved even today.
