"In July 1913, twenty-five-year-old Annie Clements had seen enough of the world to know that it was unfair. She's spent her whole life in the coal-mining town of Calumet, Michigan where men risk their lives for meager salaries--and had barely enough to put food on the table and clothes on their backs. The women labor in the houses of the elite, and send their husbands and sons deep underground each day, dreading the fateful call of the company man telling them their loved ones aren't coming home. When Annie decides to stand up for herself, and the entire town of Calumet, nearly everyone believes she may have taken on more than she is prepared to handle"-- Provided by publisher.

The Women of the Copper Country submitted by jillmf on September 23, 2020, 9:44am ERROR: In the addl.org review of the above book, it states that Calumet is a coal-mining town. NOT!

Took me to another place submitted by emroon on July 17, 2022, 3:40pm Despite living in Michigan all my life, I did not know this history. This novel takes the true story of women attempting to Unionize miners in the Upper Peninsula and takes it into a heartbreaking and fascinating tale about family, loyalty, and courage. I learned a lot and it made me think, different characters were motivated in different ways and on different sides of the conflict, but they all had nuanced portrayals and I understand why they did what they did. It makes you realize that many of the workplace protections we take for granted today had to be fought for tooth and nail.

Fantastic Michigan Book submitted by pamhockey25 on August 8, 2022, 6:22pm This is a novel based on true events, and real people in Copper county, Michigan in the UP. I did not want to put this book down and the things these people lived through are horrific. Highly recommended

Excellent submitted by lizgiessner on July 3, 2023, 8:06pm This book is obviously well-researched. It is both informative and moving. I plan to read more of Russell's work.
