"Groundbreaking narrative nonfiction for teens that tells the story of the AIDS crisis in America. Thirty-five years ago, it was a modern-day, mysterious plague. Its earliest victims were mostly gay men, some of the most marginalized people in the country; at its peak in America, it killed tens of thousands of people. The losses were staggering, the science frightening, and the government's inaction unforgivable. The AIDS Crisis fundamentally changed the fabric of the United States. Viral presents the history of the AIDS crisis through the lens of the brave victims and activists who demanded action and literally fought for their lives. This compassionate but unflinching text explores everything from the disease's origins and how it spread to the activism it inspired and how the world confronts HIV and AIDS today"-- Provided by publisher.

How AIDS Activism Made a Difference submitted by Meginator on June 11, 2021, 6:10pm This nonfiction book is aimed at a young adult audience, but I recommend it for any reader looking for a relatively brief, accessible introduction to the history of the AIDS epidemic in the United States. Bausum focuses primarily on the virus’s impact on gay men and on the various activist movements that formed to raise awareness about the disease and encourage societal and government support for effective treatment options. Much of the text is based around primary sources such as interviews, newspaper articles, and memoirs, emphasizing the human impact beyond the numbers and preventing the victims from being seen as faceless statistics. With its focus on activism and social change, the book is an especially good fit for younger audiences, though its core messages will resonate with readers of all ages.
