Magically Brilliant submitted by purplekitty on July 1, 2019, 6:11pm This book is AMAZING. This is such a page-turner, rich in just about every. single. way. possible. It's a book you can read for hours on end (I, for one, devoured it in a little over a day, and would have done so sooner if I could). It is action-packed, hilarious, and moving. I highly recommend it.
Without giving too much away, this is a book about sorcerers, demons, and magical books, called grimoires, which are sentient. It's also a book about change, and deeply human emotions.
One of the many shining elements in this book is the characterization. Rogerson manages to achieve both [mostly] believable character arcs, and morally grey characters. For anyone out there who is not a fan of morally grey characters, this is not the book for you. At risks of spoilers, I won't discuss specific characters, but rest assured that there are no purely good or evil characters. These are real people, with real emotions, and pasts, and futures. This is shown in no small part by character arcs. Characters do change over the course of the book - especially in terms of the main characte. This is good, of course. But what makes this book so special is that the character arcs are believable. Even when mannerisms seem strange, they can be explained by the characters' backstory. And change in characters, for the most part, is not jolting. It is logical, and gradual, and sometimes only noticeable when looking back. It is, in a word, fantastic.
The plot is admirably set up. It's one of those rare books where the twist (or twists, at risk of giving stuff away) is/are mostly unpredictable, but are also set up in such a way that they are believable. They enhance the plot, and the plot enhances them. Every detail is mentioned for a reason. The world-building is the same; images are rich and varied, but succinct enough that it doesn't become a bore. You'll never be reading pages of details, but you will still know what everything looks like.
Essentially, this is a rich book, filled to the brim with everything that makes a book fantastic. It's a page-turner, filled with rich plot, imagery, and characters. This is, quite simply, a must-read.

Great! submitted by Gladman on June 22, 2020, 10:13am This book is great, with just the right amount of romance, action, mystery, and more! This book is definitely worth your time to read!

One of my all time favorites submitted by laursanc6 on June 24, 2021, 5:32pm
I came in with low expectations as I saw a few people were disappointed. However, this novel exceeded my expectations and surprised me. I really connected to Elisabeth’s character and I think her friendship with Katrien was so nice to see. I find myself staying away from books without a lot of romance but, I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy reading about a friendship that wasn’t even in the book that much. Elisabeth was refreshing to read about as you could feel her passion for libraries seeping out of the pages. Her compassion for Silas and desire to do what is right struck a cord with me. Nathaniel was an interesting love interest but more than that it was interesting to see him evolve. Their romance was cute albeit a little rushed in my opinion. But, my love for this book stems from the world that Rogerson has built. Specifically her creative execution of grimoires and “living” libraries. Every time she detailed about Elisabeth walking among the grimoires and secret passages in the library I could feel myself being transported into that world. The only downsides for me were the hasty romance and I didn’t love Ashcroft as the villain.
