A fascinating YA novel about the drug war in the Philippines submitted by TeacherN on July 26, 2019, 9:32am As a middle school teacher I often read middle grade and YA novels to find good books to recommend to my students. This book will definitely be recommended, but it's probably best for 8th-grade and up. A Filipino-American boy and senior in high school, Jay, finds out that his cousin in the Philippines, a cousin he was once very close with, but with whom he has lost touch, has died in some mysterious way. He decides to travel to the Philippines over his spring break to stay with family and find out how his cousin died. Along the way, he learns a great deal about his home country, the government, the country's "war on drugs".
Couldn’t put it down submitted by mgabbieb on June 29, 2022, 4:19pm Easy to read, compelling plot, and a peek into a deeply complex history. Would recommend for older teens.
Must Read submitted by LauraMarie on June 29, 2023, 3:50pm Patron Saints of Nothing is an incredibly powerful novel that offers significant insight into President Duterte's War on Drugs in the Philippines. I particularly enjoyed the themes of silence/noise, loneliness/connection, identity, purpose, and truth. Highly highly recommend for adults and teens!
