Ever since she got pregnant freshman year, Emoni Santiago's life has been about making the tough decisions, doing what has to be done for her daughter and her abuela. The one place she can let all that go is in the kitchen. There, she lets her hands tell her what to cook, listening to her intuition and adding a little something magical every time, turning her food into straight-up goodness. Even though she's always dreamed of working in a kitchen after she graduates, Emoni knows that it's not worth her time to pursue the impossible. Yet despite the rules she's made for her life - and everyone else's rules, which she refuses to play by - once Emoni starts cooking, her only choice is to let her talent break free. From the author of National Book Award winner The Poet X comes a dazzling story of a girl with talent, pride, and a drive to create that keeps her fire burning bright. -- From dust jacket.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Highly recommended for all submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 20, 2020, 3:39pm 5/5 stars. An absolutely phenomenal YA book that brings the reader up close and personal in the life of a high school senior with a rich history and many personal challenges. Emoni has a two year old daughter, has been raised by her grandmother, and loves cooking more than anything else. None of these seem like something that would inherently be a book that I would pick up, yet this might be among the most engrossing books I read this year. As a YA book, it wasn’t a reading challenge, but as a view into another life, it raised all kinds of wonderful questions. Highly recommended for all.

Delightful read! submitted by ldibble on October 13, 2020, 8:20am This has the convergence of “black” and “burico” identities at the center of the arching theme of chasing your dreams despite barriers. It tackled teen pregnancy in a realistic less judge-y way. It showed the value of community. It showed inter-generational home and the complexity of those relationships. It showed the struggle of bright line rules and how equal is not always fair and certainly not just.
