Totally Irreverent; Totally Works submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:28pm This film is really good, and I enjoyed it even more than the first Lego Movie. The animation brings the characters and settings to vivid life while keeping the physical characteristics that make them feel like the physical toys they are based on. The story has a firm moral core that works on several levels; younger viewers will understand it well enough, but more mature audiences will find significant depth beneath the nonstop wisecracks and silliness. The film's sense of humor tends toward the absurd, full of puns and ample helpings of irony (and a lot of references for the adults in the room), but the writers and cast are so committed to this irreverent attitude that it totally works. The whole production is completely over-the-top, from the core concept itself to the brilliantly addictive soundtrack, but somehow it all comes together with just enough wide-eyed sincerity to work. Everything, indeed, is awesome.
