Relevant and Crucial submitted by Meginator on July 6, 2019, 7:55pm This lovely little book would be far more enjoyable if it wasn’t so painfully relevant to our current situation, but here we are regardless. Jonah Winter splits no hairs whatsoever with the story, which speaks directly to the danger of disregarding the importance, truth, and power of facts, even in the face of shadowy authority figures (ahem). Yet for all of its political overtones, the book remains perfectly readable for young audiences, who will be charmed by Pete Oswald’s depictions of facts as cute blobs with wide-eyed expressions and also by some of the example facts that show up throughout the book; the story does a wonderful job of rendering a complex problem into terms that even children can understand. The clarity and, yes, obviousness of the message further highlight the absolute absurdity of the times we find ourselves in, but hopefully most younger readers will be blissfully unaware of this painful context. The creators may be awfully direct, but they keep things enjoyable, making this a potent work of art that speaks truth to power without forgetting its core readership. “The Sad Little Fact” belongs on every bookshelf.
