No one knows what Nikolai Lantsov endured in his country's bloody civil war. Now enemies gather at his weakened borders, and the young king must find a way to refill Ravka's coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army. Zoya Nazyalensky is devoted to rebuilding the army -- but she also has enemies to conquer. Nina Zenik wages her own war to save the Grisha -- and must face the pain of her past. As a dark magic within Nikolai grows stronger, he must journey where the deepest magic survives -- and vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. -- adapted from jacket

great characters, a lot of setup for book 2 submitted by bec on August 14, 2019, 8:39am I wanted to love this book more than I did; Bardugo's characters and the Grishaverse make for some of the best new fantasy/YA fantasy out there. At the same time, King of Scars inherits some of the flaws of the original Grisha trilogy (Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom, kind of removed from that world, seem to escape that?) and we see some familiar plot lines return in a less than fresh way. In the end, I loved the return to the characters and the world- especially seeing Nina, Zoya, and Nikolai grow into their political power in an uncertain time. But where the whole book gets us doesn't add too much to the series, and instead sets up for the sequel. It'll be a great sequel, but I'd have wished for a stronger first book.

I wanted to enjoy it submitted by steveiew on July 19, 2020, 5:50pm I have loved all of Bardugo's other books in the Grishaverse so I was sure I would love this book as well. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to it's hype and fell really flat for me.

Predictable submitted by mshivaprasad on July 21, 2020, 12:33pm I picked this up without reading the original trilogy so it was a little confusing. That said, it's also not necessary for you to read the OG for this. The story was well written but I found it to be similar to other ones and a predictable plot.

Bardugo doesn't write anything bad submitted by audreyhalversen on July 13, 2022, 12:42pm This is good! Not quite as good as the Six of Crows books, but close. I like that we get to explore some characters that we were already familiar with on a deeper level. Rule of Wolves is a very worthy follow-up to this and is probably a bit better.

Good book submitted by amym on August 1, 2023, 4:54pm It's nice to return to the Grishaverse. This isn't as good as the Six of Crows series, but it has the same strong character development and world building. It got a little jarring to constantly switch between Zoya and Nina. I would just get really interested in the current thread, then have to switch back to the other one before I was ready.
