In this candid and inspiring book, Gates traces her awakening to the link between women's empowerment and the health of societies. She shows some of the tremendous opportunities that exist right now to 'turbo charge' change. And she provides simple and effective ways each one of us can make a difference. A personal statement of passionate conviction, this book tells of Gates' journey from a partner working behind the scenes to one of the world's foremost advocates for women, driven by the belief that no one should be excluded, all lives have equal value, and gender equity is the lever that lifts everything.

Good for a Book group discussion submitted by pamelawright on August 12, 2020, 8:39pm There were many different ideas presented that gave us a lot to discuss.
read by the author submitted by camelsamba on August 28, 2020, 4:31pm Melinda Gates reads her own book, which allows her to pour her passion into the reading. However, you can also tell that she is not a professional voice actor. But don't let that detract from the power of what she has to say: empowering women uplifts society as a whole.
Very interesting submitted by sbtaylor on July 20, 2021, 1:03pm Melinda Gates reads this and it is clearly very personal to her. I (a millennial) really found familiarity between Melinda's experiences and that of my mom and other older relatives, but (thankfully) less so for me. Really prompted good discussion of how things have changed and what have stayed the same.
