A Caper of Menace, and a Cracking Good Time
submitted by nbauer on November 3, 2019, 2:32pm
This was my first Denise Mina, won't be the last. Anna, the protagonist, starts her day off pretty badly, and then watches everything get a whole lot worse at rocket speed. Right off the bat, she teams up with possibly the worst possible person to deal with in a crisis, a depressed, down on his luck rock star. Anna shares her obsession with a true crime podcast with him. Before long, they're both mired in figuring out the unsolved mystery up to their necks. It's like if Hitchcock came back as Kathryn Bigelow, but fortunately kept his sense of humor.
Mina's voice completely sets this apart. She's funny, mercurial, and balances a lot of complex emotion without getting either preachy or sentimental. The ending didn't quite work for me. I didn't care. It worked well enough. And damn, this was fun to read.
