Memoir + Engineering submitted by Meginator on August 23, 2020, 6:57pm This book is very much in line with David Macaulay’s previous books, supplementing his technologically minded approach with the story of his own immigration to the United States. The first part of the book documents the development of steam engines and steam-powered transatlantic ocean liners, and the following sections focus more specifically on the SS United States and its designer, William Francis Gibbs. Macaulay’s intricate mechanical illustrations are a highlight, including a stunningly intricate four-page fold-out United States cross-section, but some of their finer details may be lost on readers without a firm grasp on the basics of physics and engineering. Macaulay’s integration of his personal experiences give this book a uniquely intimate feel compared to some of his other books, and it represents the best use of his particular talents.
