Giraffes on Horseback Salad was a Marx Brothers film written by modern art icon Salvador Dali, who'd befriended Harpo. Rejected by MGM, the script was thought lost forever. But author Josh Frank found it, and with comedian Tim Heidecker and Spanish comics creator Manuela Pertega, he's re-created the film as a graphic novel in all its gorgeous full-color, cinematic, surreal glory. In the story, a businessman named Jimmy (played by Harpo) is drawn to the mysterious Surrealist Woman, whose very presence changes humdrum reality into Dali-esque fantasy. With the help of Groucho and Chico, Jimmy seeks to join her fantastical world--but forces of normalcy threaten to end their romance. Includes new Marx Brothers songs and antics, plus the real-world story behind the historic collaboration.

Well, that was.... interesting

This “film” adapted to comic was a fascinating look into the mind and life of Salvador Dalí with a sprinkling of Harpo Marx. A love story that makes absolutely no sense at first, but the deeper you go, the more clearly you can understand the concepts behind the absurd world that was built. I can certainly understand how it never made it to film back in the ‘30s. Even today, it would be a difficult production to pitch with such high-minded concepts and nearly impossible scenes. However, I think if it were made today, I could see it as an independent film turned cult classic; and with CG graphics, a lot of those scenes would be more achievable.
It is certainly a struggle to get through this book, especially if you don’t have any grasp on surrealism. However, if you’re a Dalí fan, this is a really fine piece that was well crafted with lots of care to truly capture and blend the minds of two surrealist artists.
