Fascinating history submitted by Sara W on July 20, 2019, 3:00pm The Polynesian people accomplished incredible feats of navigation and exploration, and this book taught me much more about their achievements than I knew.

Sea People submitted by leighsprauer on September 11, 2023, 7:50am Thompson gives a clear, easy to read history of the Western efforts to understand the history of Polynesia. Starting with the earliest European explorers, in the 16th c, to modern linguistics and carbon dating, she shows how the West's knowledge of Polynesian history continued to expand over the past five centuries. She also explains the gaps in knowledge, and the difficulties in ever having a complete history. She does a particularly good job of explaining the differences in worldview between Westerners and Polynesians that have made it harder to get a complete picture of their history.
