Tommy Caldwell, Kevin Jorgeson.
"In January, 2015, American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson captivated the world with their effort to climb the Dawn Wall, a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot rock face in Yosemite National Park, California. The pair lived on the sheer veritical cliff for weeks, igniting a frenzy of global media attention. But for Tommy Caldwell, the Dawn Wall was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles, At the age of 22, the climbing prodigy was taken hostage by rebels in Kyrgyzstan. Shortly after, he lost his index finger in an accident, but resolved to come back stronger. When his marriage fell apart, he escaped the pain by fixating on the extraordinary goal of free climbing the Dawn Wall. Blurring the line between dedication and obsession, Caldwell and his partner, Jorgeson spend six years meticulously plotting and practicing their route. On the final attempt, with the world watching, Caldwell is faced with a moment of truth, should he abandon his partner to fulfill his ultimate dream, or risk his own success for the sake of their friendship." -- container.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Stunning Achievement submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 11:00pm This documentary follows a pair of rock climbers as they attempt to find a climbable route along El Capitan’s Dawn Wall. The filmmakers do an exemplary job of explaining the climbers’ goal and exploring the many factors that made their task so difficult, from the lack of holds, the enormous amount of time required (the project encompassed nearly a decade, and every year the climbers spent weeks at a time hanging from the rock), and the cumulative psychological effects of repeated failures. At the same time, the documentary offers a brief biographical sketch of lead climber Tommy Caldwell that hints at some of his motivation for taking on such a massive and challenging project, without being overly glowing or unnecessarily dramatic. The narrative winds easily between its timelines and weaves its stories seamlessly together, all while explaining the climb itself and its potential impact on the climbing community. With ample background information and context, striking cinematography, and compelling real-life drama with suspense and plot twists aplenty, this is a wonderful example of narrative nonfiction filmmaking.
