The most surprising aspect of this album to me is the group’s ability to tap into the current pop music zeitgeist while retaining the defining elements of their signature sound; the result is a group of tracks that feel current while invoking the slightest hints of nostalgia. Nothing here is bleeding edge, or even particularly innovative for that matter, but the Backstreet Boys have selected songs that are right in their comfort zone, neither straining to seem hip nor remaining bound by their past. The lyrical content includes both the expected ruminations on love and also some more mature musings that dive into deep (and surprisingly dark, for a boy band) emotions; tracks like the acoustic “Breathe” (probably my favorite of the bunch) do both. For all of the coordinated dance numbers and boyish charm, they’re actually pretty good singers too; their harmonies are often stunning, even if their quality as individual singers varies a bit. To be honest, I almost certainly would have liked this regardless of its actual quality because of my lingering fondness for the group, but it definitely exceeded my expectations. This one’s definitely worth trying if you’re on the fence about it.
