The Moment of Lift submitted by camieroper on July 6, 2019, 3:40pm Gently written, this book shows -- rather than tells -- the ultimate value of bringing about equal rights to men and women across the globe. Ms. Gates has kept detailed notes of her travels and meetings around the globe over the past couple decades, including the names of people with whom she met and spoke. There is a quiet power behind her that fuels a deep desire to truly improve the lives of all men, women, and children. When she revisits areas that have implemented changes her foundation recommended, the people there literally flock around her to thank her and show her how their lives have improved. Her work with the women who farm, in particular, illuminates the importance of talking to the people who actually do the work in an area. It is they who see the problems and can help bring them to light. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation does not just donate huge amounts of money. It first does incredibly deep research, first to see which problems to address to bring about the most significant improvement in lives, and second, to see how best to employ a change. I can't wait for more of the foundation's work to continue and for the books that document it to follow.
Expected more submitted by psgriffi on October 27, 2019, 9:53pm I was disappointed that Gates didn't cite anyone or any journal for her statistics and data. It felt like we were supposed to just believe her because it's Melinda Gates.
GREAT book! submitted by LVDS on June 20, 2020, 2:22pm Wonderful stories highlighting how we may lift whole communities UP out of poverty by lifting women's education & health. Many parallels may be applied to our issues with racism now.
