When Condé Nast offered Ruth Reichl the top position at America's oldest epicurean magazine, she declined. She was a writer, not a manager, and had no inclination to be anyone's boss. Yet Reichl had been reading Gourmet since she was eight; it had inspired her career. How could she say no? This is the story of a former Berkeley hippie entering the corporate world and worrying about losing her soul. It is the story of the moment restaurants became an important part of popular culture, a time when the rise of the farm-to-table movement changed, forever, the way we eat. Readers will meet legendary chefs like David Chang and Eric Ripert, idiosyncratic writers like David Foster Wallace, and a colorful group of editors and art directors who, under Reichl's leadership, transformed stately Gourmet into a cutting-edge publication. This was the golden age of print media--the last spendthrift gasp before the Internet turned the magazine world upside down. Complete with recipes, Save Me the Plums is a personal journey of a woman coming to terms with being in charge and making a mark, following a passion and holding on to her dreams--even when she ends up in a place she never expected to be.

Fun read for a foodie submitted by jhaberich on June 19, 2019, 12:28pm If you haven't already, you should read Ruth Reichl's other memoirs prior to tackling this one as they follow her life sequentially. This memoir is an enjoyable (quick) read especially if you are a foodie. It's fun to get the inside scoop on the food world albeit sad to watch the demise of Gourmet magazine.

Engaging non-fiction submitted by A2AE on July 2, 2019, 3:24pm I wasn't a reader of Gourmet, but I still enjoyed Ruth's memoir about her experience leading the magazine and seeing it through to the end. A great read for lovers of food, food writing, and the magazine industry.

A fun read submitted by annikajoyce on July 12, 2019, 11:09pm I liked this book. At times, I felt that Reichl was trying to situate herself in a certain light (she draws stark contrasts between her character and those wealthier elites running the magazine scene in New York City)-- however, this sense of artificial construction didn't hinder my enjoyment of the book. It was a pleasure reading about Reichl's amazing experiences in the world of food writing. She is very talented, allowing readers to sense and feel and nearly taste the dishes she describes. There are also several recipes (maybe four or five) scattered throughout the book, which I intend to try.

Engaging Foodie Memoir submitted by jlnavin on August 26, 2020, 4:28pm An interesting story for sure. It was nice following her culinary adventures as the head editor of Gourmet magazine. Enjoyed reading the story about the culinary community getting together to help feed first responders after 9/11. The book also contains some tasty recipes.
