Disappointing... submitted by ssmyth on June 18, 2019, 12:34pm When I heard about this film, the award willing cast and director and basic plot I had hoped for a great caper film. Think Oceans 11 or another Heist movie. Nope. Some good camera work. Kept waiting and hoping for it to kick into gear and it never did. So disappointing

This film consistently surprised me, from its general tone to several of the twists, including a few that I figured out just moments before the filmmakers revealed their hand. Viola Davis is superb in the lead role, and the entire cast delivers knockout performances full of psychological nuances that provide the film’s emotional and thematic depth. The story does revolve around a heist, but the focus is less on the thieves’ cleverness than on the individual desperation that leads them to the act; the plot is not quite a repudiation of, or even necessarily a twist on, that venerable cinematic genre, but it functions more as an apt vehicle for the characters’ complex psychological dramas. The film plays on viewers’ expectations to ratchet up the tension, and the experience is intense and gripping, unsurprising considering that Gillian Flynn collaborated on the script. At times, in fact, the film feels more like a novel in its slow leak of backstory and its gradually emerging threads of intrigue. Overall, though the script fails to fully explore some of the issues of class, race, and politics it takes pains to introduce, the film is a satisfying, ethically ambiguous crime drama with a core group of capable (anti-?)heroines at its center.
