COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A turning point submitted by oriolbt on July 12, 2023, 11:17am I feel like Earl really popped a seal with this album, pushing the marriage of form-and-content that already felt peak (nadir?) on his previous full-length record to new heights (depths?) and flooding the capsule with an oppressive atmosphere that, on the first several listens, feels difficult to breathe. Earl so fully wraps the listener in his own (at this point professionally) paranoid and alienated perspective. The simple, loop-based production deemphasizes the grinding, aggressive dopamine bombast of his early Odd Future releases (remember when we called those songs abrasive? – marshmallows compared to this tape) and affords space for the listener to appreciate Earl's cadence: the pockets he is able to find on these pared-down beats are astoundingly crisp and deliver ample dopamine in their own right.

Lyrically, the content is even more gratifying, serving a buffet of queasy validation for anyone who has ever experienced self-doubt or insecurity, all in his painfully relatable yet dizzyingly nuanced idiom. Earl has not only succeeded at inverting the misanthropic violence of his OF debut, directing the violence and aggression inward; he also manages some gestures towards self-acceptance. We've all gotta start somewhere! Earl is easily one of the best rappers of his generation, and this album is him doing his dang thing, making it look effortless. It's an album to get lost in, and only slightly one to spiral into (disclaimer: with vanishingly few exceptions, I don't actually think difficult art is bad for people's mental health. Certainly not art that deals frankly with mental illness).

This record opened the door for a lot of similar understated, loopy-beat underground rap acts like MIKE, Mavi, Pink Siifu, Maxo (a rapper distinct from and markedly more instrospective than Maxo Kream) to gain recognition if not at a mainstream level, something much closer thereto. I don't think this would be the case if the album wasn't as good as it is. Abrasion can be rough, literally, but it helps us slough away the dead skin.
