Fascinating read/very informative submitted by hiker15 on August 17, 2020, 7:07pm Thorough reporting of the story behind the 1986 nuclear disaster in Chernobyl. The author takes you step by step through what happened the day of the disaster, then goes through all of the tremendous clean-up/remediation efforts. Also discussed are the design flaws of that type of reactor and the flaws of the USSR system that allowed secrecy, infighting, unreasonable deadlines causing improper shortcuts, lack of dissemination of necessary information to the operators, etc, etc, that resulted in the disaster.

You would think this material would be very dry reading, but the author managed to make it engaging and fascinating. Reading ~50 pages/day, I finished the book in 7 days. I highly recommend this book.

Accessible reading for non-scientists submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 16, 2021, 8:50pm A truly astonishing book that melds science and human stories to describe one of the greatest industrial accidents on our planet. With the benefit of time, access, and hindsight, the author has pieced together a full picture of the before, during, and (perhaps most interestingly) after of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. It is accessible reading for non-scientists, and feels utterly important as the world considers moving toward “clean” energy.
