Annika (rhymes with Monica) Rose is an English major at the University of Illinois. Anxious in social situations where she finds most people's behavior confusing, she'd rather be surrounded by the order and discipline of books or the quiet solitude of playing chess.

1991 and 2001 and Austism Spectrum and Romance submitted by sdunav on July 10, 2019, 10:03pm This is a sweet but not cutesy in the least romance, set at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1991 and Chicago and New York ten years later. The characters are both fascinating, and their challenges are realistic and interesting. I will definitely seek out Garvis-Grave's backlist!
Surprised me, in the best way possible

In a year that I had committed to reading diverse authors, I was surprised when I got this book in from a library wait list and discovered that I was starting in on a romance written by a White woman. I have nothing against this, of course! I had just made a point of choosing books and authors with more diversity this year, and couldn't figure out why this book made my list. (I know why books go on my list when I put them on, then try not to read the jackets/ back covers when they come in, because I really like to let the author present the book in its own way, without somebody else's summary influencing me.)
Imagine my delight when Annika... well. I don't want to spoil what Annika doesn't know and the author doesn't say until later. Let's just say that the characters are fully realized, and their relationship had all kinds of wonderful complexity (couple vs. the world, one vs. the other, and each vs. themselves). It was likely the only romance I read in 2020, and it was right up my alley for its topic and how well written it was. An excellent read.
