Spy Thriller? submitted by flemingj on August 2, 2020, 7:05pm Maybe not the spy thriller some were expecting, indicated by very mixed reviews online. I really enjoyed hearing about the spy game from a Black woman’s perspective and the strong family side story.

what does it mean to be an American Spy? submitted by camelsamba on August 23, 2021, 11:09pm I first heard about this book through an author interview on the "Spycast" podcast, so I snapped it up when I saw the audiobook was available in Libby. The main character is a black woman FBI agent who gets recruited to work with the CIA - this is a point of view not often found in spy novels. I enjoyed it quite a lot!

Spy thriller from a Black woman's perspective submitted by vickik on August 3, 2022, 10:49am American Spy is a brilliantly-written Cold War thriller about a Black female FBI agent, Marie Mitchell, who is constantly being turned down for high-profile assignments because of her race and gender. When a CIA agent offers her an assignment in Burkina Faso, she accepts it, even though she suspects she was offered it because she's a Black woman. She is supposed to help the CIA bring down Thomas Sankara, Burkina Faso's president. Then she falls in love with Sankara, and starts to question her beliefs. Will she continue with her assignment, even if it means betraying the man she loves? I enjoyed this novel very much. It's unusual to have a spy thriller written from a Black woman's point of view. And I learned a lot about Burkina Faso, and a part of the world I didn't know much about before reading this book.
