The show opens with rookie homicide detective Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor) joining cocky sharp experience Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher) trying to solve murders and (thus) turn names on the board from red to black. Although it has an episodic flavor, there is a story arc across the series, primarily on character development and the life of the department, but also w/respect to the first case Bayliss gets, and his complex relationship with Pembleton.
