COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Disappointing in Context submitted by Meginator on August 24, 2020, 10:27pm I find it really difficult to approach this album objectively, because I am inevitably disappointed that Mumford & Sons moved away from the folk influences that so defined their early sound, and I suspect that I would be more kindly disposed toward it had their first two albums not made such an indelible impression on me. Nonetheless, this does seem to be a bit of a return to form, focusing more on acoustic instrumentation and Marcus Mumford’s signature mournful vocal style and less on imitating the latest pop music trends. The songs feel spare and intimate and often sad, with electronic flourishes adding to a larger soundscape rather than providing a focal point; this suits the group’s style and allows their considerable talent to come back into focus, though the folk roots that initially distinguished them are difficult to discern here. Overall, then, this album is fine, with few memorable tracks and few stylistic quirks to distinguish it in any meaningful way but a sense of strange, sad urgency about it regardless.
