"Passing for Human is what Finck calls 'a neurological coming-of-age story,' one in which, through her childhood, human connection proved elusive and her most enduring relationships were with plants and rocks and imaginary friends; in which her mother was an artist whose creative life had been stifled by an unhappy first marriage and a deeply sexist society that seemed expressly designed to snuff out creativity in women; in which her father was a doctor who struggled in secret with the guilt of having passed his own form of otherness on to his daughter; and in which, as an adult, Finck finally finds her shadow again--and, with it, her true self."--Inside dust jacket.

So Humble and Honest submitted by jucruz on July 13, 2019, 4:56pm I loved that this book addresses self doubt and disagreement in ones writing process. Even the illustrations are fairly childlike but very strongly represent what this character is going through. To me, that says that - no matter your medium or skill level - you DO have the ability to craft stories. And they’re worth it.
Not sure how this was a memoir....

This graphic novel did almost nothing for me. It’s subtitled “A Graphic Memoir,” and I understand memoirs to be the story of the author… yet this book was notably the story of the author’s parents and then several fanciful versions or alternate realities or imaginary invented memories of the author/illustrator’s life. I don’t really see how that’s a memoir.
While the drawing style doesn’t particularly appeal to me, I did think that it leant a great deal to the story and was beautifully integrated into the author’s tale. The story wouldn’t be the same in another form… a graphic novel was perfect for the particular way that this author wanted to tell this particular story. I think what didn’t work for me was that it was, right from the cover, pitched as a memoir, and I didn’t find that it met the meaning I hold for that word. I think if instead it had been “Passing for Human: A Graphic Telling of My Search for Myself” the book would have worked much better for me. Odd, but there it is.
