When Catherine Saxon, an American correspondent reporting on the war in Europe, is found murdered in her London digs, news of her death is concealed by British authorities. Serving as a linchpin between Scotland Yard and the Secret Service, Robert MacFarlane pays a visit to Maisie Dobbs, seeking her help. He is accompanied by an agent from the US Department of Justice--Mark Scott, the American who helped Maisie get out of Hitler's Munich in 1938. MacFarlane asks Maisie to work with Scott to uncover the truth about Saxon's death. As the Germans unleash the full terror of their blitzkrieg upon the British Isles, raining death and destruction from the skies, Maisie must balance the demands of solving this dangerous case with her need to protect Anna, the young evacuee she has grown to love and wants to adopt. Entangled in an investigation linked to the power of wartime propaganda and American political intrigue being played out in Britain, Maisie will face losing her dearest friend--and the possibility that she might be falling in love again.

More from Maisie submitted by saleder on July 12, 2019, 5:40pm This is another book in the series of Maisie Dobbs suspense novels, with this one being set in Great Britain during The Blitz of WWII. The author really does her research and sets the stage of wartime London and the surrounding area, and the effect it has on the lives of the people there, all the while setting out an interesting mystery for Maisie to solve. Check out the whole series.

not the best submitted by camelsamba on June 24, 2023, 3:56pm In general, I enjoy this series. And as usual with a series, different volumes will be better than others. This one was good, but not the best. Things that annoyed me:
- The ambulance subplot. It almost felt like Winspear decided "this is a distraction, can't have Maisie on a sleep deficit every day" so chose this as a way to wrap it up. (Then again, maybe it'll be a way for Tim to snap out of his funk if he steps it up for his mom.)
- the solution of the Saxon murder seemed to come out of the blue. We are never really told what led Maisie to make those inferences. Did she notice the culprit was left-handed by startling them? Or was it the clothes? There's a reference to an off-hand remark clarifying things; if so, what was it? Unsatisfying.
- this one is on me: I don't remember what Mark Scott did in Munich that made her so angry with him. But since it seems somewhat crucial to the plot, it would be nice if we had a few more reminders (since Winspear often drops reminders).
