Decent Collection with Some Disappointments submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:37pm This Garfield collection hits most of the strip’s high points, with a lot of weekly themes that add to the humor by riffing on similar themes and setups. Unfortunately, the Halloween and Christmas seasons, usually a strong point and often surprisingly sentimental, are particularly weak here to the point of being almost ignored. Likewise, the jokes fall firmly within the strip’s well-established themes, with a bit of repetition that can be charming or annoying depending on the specific execution. Liz is particularly prominent throughout all three of the books included here, with some cameo appearances from other regulars like Arlene and various neighborhood dogs. These three books deliver precisely what you expect from Garfield, Jon, Odie, and the rest of the characters who have made this strip so iconic and long-lasting. If you generally enjoy Garfield, you’ll like this, but there’s nothing here to particularly recommend it to new readers or readers who want something new from the series.
