no real plot submitted by camelsamba on June 20, 2018, 9:39pm Despite being a big Madeleine L'Engle fan, I was disappointed in this book. It was basically a bunch of stories of every day occurrences in the Austin family. No real plot line. I might have found it comforting if I were younger – although it's possible that even then I would have been bored! The characters do develop (especially Maggie), and I know that lots of people adore the book, but it was not my cup of tea.

One funny connection: the family is all packed up to visit the grandfather (by the sea in Maine IIRC - how I would love to stay in a house by the sea in Maine!). Mrs Austin disappears into the house and everyone wonders what is taking so long. When she finally reappears she reveals that he did a quick home repair task - painted something in the bathroom, perhaps? I forget now! But the reason it struck me is that I really need to replace/supplement the anti-slip strips in our tub but it needs to be when no one is going to use it for a few days. I should heed the example of Mrs Austin and do it right before we drive out of town!
