Turning the traditional idea of an alphabet book on its head, P is for Pterodactyl is perfect for anyone who has ever been stumped by silent letters or confused by absurd homophones. This whimsical, unique book takes silent letter entries like "K is for Knight" a step further with "The noble knight's knife nicked the knave's knee." Lively illustrations provide context clues, and alliterative words help readers navigate text like "a bright white gnat is gnawing on my gnocchi" with ease. Everyone from early learners to grown-up grammarians will love this wacky book where "A is for Aisle" but "Y is definitely not for Why."

actually the best submitted by Lady Macbeth on August 11, 2019, 1:59pm When my friends start having kids I will be getting these children this book. It may end some friendships and will certainly confuse small children but heck this book is amazing. It has a glossary at the end so its even sort of educational!

P is for Pterodactyl – submitted by sara on June 17, 2020, 6:47pm A very clever book for kids, adults, or ESL students. It’s full of words that don’t follow the rules of English pronunciation. The illustrations are adorable as well.

Great for word lovers submitted by KBarkerPeters on July 25, 2020, 3:52pm This is a fun title for adults who like to play with language. Also an engaging review of tricky spelling/pronunciation rules for younger readers.

The Linguist's Alphabet Book submitted by Meginator on August 17, 2020, 7:33pm This delightful book revels in the English language’s phonetic inconsistencies, delivering a surprisingly rich illustration of the many ways in which letters can misbehave. A playful sentence accompanies each entry, including further examples of unexpected pronunciation and providing fodder for drawings filled with references to the text. This book maintains a playful spirit that will charm audiences of all ages while encouraging readers to look at language more deeply and, perhaps, with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Not an early reader text but definitely hilarious submitted by JennJenn on August 23, 2022, 7:11pm This book is fun. It is not a simple read because of all the challenging ways that English misuses letters but it is absolutely a good book to read together.

fun for (almost) all ages submitted by nemiller on June 22, 2023, 8:00am This is one of the funniest kids books I've read in a while! I thought it was going to be like Uncle Shelby's ABZs by Shel Silverstein, but unlike that one, this book is appropriate for all ages. The sentences are silly and fun, the illustrations have cool little details, and there's even a glossary in back!

I'd recommend it for upper elementary an older, a similar audience to The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. There's also a follow-up: "No Reading Allowed" - also highly recommended!

Not for early readers submitted by robinpollak on July 31, 2023, 1:57pm This is so much fun for anyone ready to play with language. Not so great for kids just learning their letters!
