COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Not for me submitted by SaraP on August 2, 2019, 12:57pm I've heard a lot of people really like this show, but it didn't hold my interest.
A bit weird, even by Star Trek standards.

The "jump" ability seems to have been lost in the canon somewhere. But, it makes it interesting, I suppose. Some quasi-environment issues. Pushing the limits of what even fans will accept. I give it three stars only because of the effects and history. Hoping it gets better.

"Star Trek: Discovery" is one of the newest Star Trek TV series and one of the best. The first episode introduces us to Michael Burnham, who is actually a woman. Orphaned due to an attach by Klingons, Burnham was then raised on Vulcan by Spock's parents, so she is his adopted sister. The initial plot point of Burnham accidentally starting a war between the Federation and the Klingons comes across as strained and inexplicable, but it leads to the story arc of the series about the war and how Burnham manages to turn her life around from a rising star in the ranks of Star Fleet to criminal to redemption as someone working on the Discovery.
Notably, this is the first Star Trek series to focus on a Woman of Color as the main character and to have a Woman of Color as a ship's captain (with the possibly exception of "Lower Decks," which doesn't count because it's a funny cartoon). The series includes several gay characters and LGBTQ actors.
Interestingly, the Klingons in this show look significantly different from the ones in "Next Generation" and "Deep Space 9." The Klingons mostly speak their own language, so viewers who don't speak Klingon must follow along by reading the translation at the bottom of the screen. This lends an air of authenticity but makes the scenes more difficult to follow, which may be why the Klingons sometimes speak to each other in English. However, the show never gives an explanation as to why the characters switch languages.
