COMMUNITY REVIEWS

DNF submitted by majean on June 15, 2019, 10:16am Couldn't finish it. This is a real slog for this Star Trek fan. It doesn't feel like Star Trek at all.

Eh. submitted by jgerman79 on July 24, 2019, 8:24pm It starts out SO GOOD, and SO Star Trek! It's a pretty steady downward slope starting with the 4th or 5th episode. There's a bit more good Star Trek in there in the 5th and 4th to last episodes, but not worth starting the series for. The only really good thing I can say for the whole season is that I liked the Klingon Opera woven throughout - though even that gets mostly abandoned half way in.

In line with DS9, Discovery is serialized submitted by tbbrown76 on July 6, 2020, 8:54pm It's okay. I really don't like some of these characters. Picard is better. But, still nice to follow the ST universe into the future. AI is a bit overdone. Not super recommended for anybody but the most ardent fan.

A new Star Trek adventure (includes some spoilers) submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 10, 2022, 2:47pm "Star Trek: Discovery" is one of the newest Star Trek TV series and one of the best. The first episode introduces us to Michael Burnham, who is actually a woman. Orphaned due to an attach by Klingons, Burnham was then raised on Vulcan by Spock's parents, so she is his adopted sister. The initial plot point of Burnham accidentally starting a war between the Federation and the Klingons comes across as strained and inexplicable, but it leads to the story arc of the series about the war and how Burnham manages to turn her life around from a rising star in the ranks of Star Fleet to criminal to redemption as someone working on the Discovery.

Notably, this is the first Star Trek series to focus on a Woman of Color as the main character and to have a Woman of Color as a ship's captain (with the possibly exception of "Lower Decks," which doesn't count because it's a funny cartoon). The series includes several gay characters and LGBTQ actors.

Interestingly, the Klingons in this show look significantly different from the ones in "Next Generation" and "Deep Space 9." The Klingons mostly speak their own language, so viewers who don't speak Klingon must follow along by reading the translation at the bottom of the screen. This lends an air of authenticity but makes the scenes more difficult to follow, which may be why the Klingons sometimes speak to each other in English. However, the show never gives an explanation as to why the characters switch languages.
