Beautiful story submitted by katiekipp on July 20, 2020, 8:51pm Gives you the warm fuzzies

An Uplifting True Story submitted by Meginator on June 12, 2021, 12:46pm This delightful picture book biography tells the story of storyteller Pura Belpré, an immigrant who became New York City’s first Puerto Rican librarian. In addition to telling Belpré’s life story, beginning with her arrival in the U.S., the text consistently refers to the idea of storytelling as a means of cultivation, insofar as ideas planted in listeners’ or readers’ heads can grow into something new with time and nourishment. It’s a particularly apt metaphor for a children’s librarian and provides illustrator Paola Escobar with ample opportunities to scatter colorful floral designs throughout the book, as well as stylized illustrations of events in Belpré’s life. The prose and pictures are colorful and bursting with life, and supplemental information provides an excellent jumping-off point for readers who want to know more about this exceptional woman or read some of the stories alluded to in this book.

interesting submitted by crp on August 2, 2021, 11:10pm interesting and good to read; i like the incorporation of historic details too

Finally submitted by Xris on August 27, 2022, 7:36pm This is the first book about Pura Belpre that I've found that has more about the story of Perez y Martina. In the back of the book, it gives a summary of the stories that Pura told when she lit the storyteller's candle. I'm glad that more light is being brought to this wonderful asset to our libraries! I loved how the plants grew in the illustrations, as Pura sowed her stories. <3
