A closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, family or the tight-knit immigrant community in which she was raised by her widowed father. That begins to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not only doing something she enjoys, but being very, very good at it.
DVD, region 1; Dolby digital 5.1.

Grrr, I wanted more story... submitted by psgriffi on August 22, 2019, 12:03am This movie just seemed to end with Agnes on the train. It left me to wonder if the producers ran out of money and had to end the film prematurely.

On one hand: this is a really beautifully drawn portrait of a particular kind of wife, a particular kind of life: the people who meet in high school, don't go to college, who hope to provide that to their children, who in turn disparage their parents' lack of education. A man working in a garage that is not doing well. A woman whose sphere has always been her family, her church. A marriage where communication probably never existed, such that the very slightest resistance on Agnes's part throws it off the tracks completely, explosively.
I appreciate that portrait, but it leaves me with many questions: how long was the sense of wrongness growing in her? If she earnestly wondered about "convenient month-sized packets" of sins for the priest's monthly confessions, what is going on internally in her faith life? Is she convinced by Robert's assertions that life is random? There's a lot of depths hinted at but unexplored.
I love Kelly Macdonald, but I'm not sure I buy her as a woman old enough to fail at smartphones, nor was I quite sure where her accent was placing them. Apparently this was set in Connecticut; who knew.
