Seventeen-year-olds Stella and Will, both suffering from cystic fibrosis, realize the only way to stay alive is to stay apart, but their love for each other is slowly pushing the boundaries of physical and emotional safety.
Can you love someone you can never touch? Stella and Will both suffer from cystic fibrosis. Being together means they could pass an infection. Stella is waiting for a lung transplant; Will is on a clinical drug trial. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. Staying six feet apart doesn't feel like safety, it feels like punishment. Would five feet apart really be so dangerous if it stops their hearts from breaking too? -- adapted from jacket

Five Feet Apart submitted by Varshini on July 20, 2019, 4:25pm This book is pretty much your typical YA fiction book. It's a bit cliche, but it's still good. I read it in one sitting.

Cliche submitted by rebecca.perreault on June 16, 2021, 3:17pm A lesson to all, even YA books - do not fetishize a chronic illness.
The book tries to spin the trope of forbidden love. Led by a cliche cast of characters: the type-A girl, the bad boy, the ethnic best friend, and the wise nurse, this book generously imagines a hospital where inpatient children can run around different units, escape to the roof, and develop friendships in secret.
It's a quick read if you're curious, but it's not a good book at all.

not great submitted by camelsamba on June 26, 2021, 11:40pm I had three reactions as I read this: the first third was kind of annoying and I almost quit; then as the relationship grew it felt more powerful and compelling so I continued reading; but the ending overall felt predictable and kind of YA-typical. It felt like it was trying hard to be the "cystic fibrosis Fault in our Stars." I didn't realize until the afterword that this is an adaptation of a movie screen play.

I have a good friend with a CF child (okay, he's in his 20s now). We have never lived in the same place so I haven't really seen their struggles up close, but I felt this book might provide some valuable insight into the lived experience of teens with a chronic disease. Beyond that, not great.

it's all right submitted by graytabby on August 4, 2022, 12:09pm i think the romance is cute, but i don't like how the author tries to romanticize a deadly illness. the feel of the book is slight sub-par as well.

Beautiful story submitted by pratibhamahesh on August 7, 2023, 9:38pm Such a beautiful story of two people who are battling a deadly illness and still find a way to come together.
