Read by Cassandra Campbell.
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. She's barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark. But Kya is not what they say. Abandoned at age ten, she has survived on her own in the marsh that she calls home. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life lessons from the land, learning from the false signals of fireflies the real way of this world. But while she could have lived in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world -- until the unthinkable happens.

Two Thumbs Up submitted by hdcooper on June 16, 2019, 12:32am I loved this book from start to finish. Kya Clark and her family live in Barkley Cove, a small coastal town in North Carolina. First, her mother leaves, then gradually her siblings, including her beloved brother, Jodie, leave. They can no longer take their father's abuse. Kya goes to school ONE day and upon being bullied, never again returns. Finally, her father abandons Kya, too, and she is left without means in the family shack. She learns to fish and survives on roots and mussels from the marsh. She becomes known as The Marsh Girl and is able to avoid truant officers and social service workers until she is of age. She falls in love twice....Tate, who leaves her to attend UNC and local star, Chase, who winds up dead. Kya, unbelievably, is accused of his death. How could shy, mild-mannered Kya possibly have done it? Did someone set her up? Is the town out to get her? Find out in this bittersweet, heartbreaking and important story of judgment, endurance and secrets. A definite pick-up! Five stars all the way!

Still thinking about it months after reading it submitted by kerstinrh on June 26, 2019, 6:53pm A story of a girl growing up in the marshes of North Carolina’s outer banks. She’s abandoned by her family at a young age and learns to survive on her own. I decided to read this book because people are raving about it online. It took me a while to get into the book but by the end I enjoyed it quite a bit and really cared about what happened to the characters.

Where the Crawdads Sing submitted by Varshini on August 31, 2019, 9:50pm I think this book is very inspirational. It's really sad, but it's a great story. Definitely recommended! 5/5.

Part romance, part murder mystery. submitted by LVDS on July 29, 2020, 3:18pm WEll done, beautiful story!!

Good story, found the audiobook distracting submitted by SMHred12 on August 10, 2023, 11:20am I did a weird thing where I listened to the audio book at certain times, then read the physical book at others. I found myself less distracted and more engaged while reading it. Maybe that's just my personality, but I think the overly Southern accent was too much for a long book.
