Intimate Portrait of a Pioneer submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 4:58pm This miniseries covers much of Sir Edmund Hillary’s life, from his first climbing ambitions as a young schoolboy to his successful expeditions to the summit of Mount Everest, the South Pole, and beyond. This broad scope necessitates some occasionally awkward pacing, as the filmmakers often cover several years in large swaths, with only a few brief thematic vignettes to distinguish them and work them into the larger narrative; nonetheless, the through-lines are readily apparent and are consistent between episodes as they build a compelling portrait of the famed explorer. The costumes, sets, and props contribute to a fully-realized vision of the various time periods, brought to life by lovely cinematography (particularly in shots that emphasize natural landscapes) and seamless acting. The episodes are a little inconsistent (the one covering the famed Everest expedition is an obvious highlight), but overall this is a high-quality production that makes the historical events and people it depicts come alive for modern viewers.
