Long, long read. Poorly written. submitted by rickmktg on January 8, 2019, 5:05pm I had high hopes for this book because I really enjoyed Game of Thrones. But this book is very difficult reading. George R.R. Martin tells the story from multiple perspectives, bouncing back and forth. He continually discounts one of the perspectives, but continually gives it. There must be 1,000 characters in this book, and names are so complex as to make it impossible to follow. I nearly gave up at 300 pages into to this 700+ page book, but felt compelled to finish it. Time I'll never get back.

I wonder if his Game of Thrones-related books are this bad?

Fire & Blood submitted by Donna Schwartzenberger on June 28, 2019, 11:39am It is not often I give up on a book. I started this and found it so difficult to follow, I never finished it. I am really disappointed in George R.R, Martin.

Such a hard read submitted by Aimless on July 24, 2019, 2:44pm I had to give up and admit defeat

Fantasy History submitted by krogers on June 29, 2023, 9:09pm I agree with the other reviewers in that this is not as well-written or as much of a page-turner as the Song of Ice and Fire books. It is a bit dense and hard to get through. But if you think about it as a history text, with its subject simply being a fantasy world instead of the real world, it’s actually fairly valuable and pretty impressive in its scope and treatment.

Skim for House of the Dragon submitted by edanella on July 27, 2023, 12:57pm If you're like me and like to dive into the lore behind the TV show and know the story before the episodes come out, I'd recommend just reading the chapters about the Dance of the Dragons. This book is written like a historical textbook, so it's not necessary to start from the beginning unless you're a GoT/ASOIAF superfan.
