The Series Hits Its Stride submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 11:10pm This is, to my mind, the strongest book of the series, fixing both the debut’s pacing problems and the sophomore effort’s unnecessary complexity. Here we find, simply and to my great relief, a gender-swapped Charlotte Holmes investigating a compelling (yet reasonably straightforward) crime with deeply personal, potentially life-altering stakes, while simultaneously navigating a few increasingly treacherous interpersonal relationships. This book has a great sense of humor to it and its breezier feel masks some of its larger sins, such as a prologue with an incredibly disappointing and interminably delayed payoff and the author’s over-reliance on hidden information. Is it a perfect novel? Not by any means, but it is a welcome prize for readers who have stuck through a pair of inconsistent, if entertaining, books to get to this point. If, like me, you were somewhat on the fence after the second book, you may well find this one worth it (just don’t, alas, read too much into that novel’s final line; trust me on this one). It feels like Sherry Thomas and Charlotte Holmes have finally hit their stride.
