"For the 75th anniversary of her birth, a Deluxe Edition of the master of the literary supernatural's most celebrated book Angela Carter was a storytelling sorceress, the literary godmother of Neil Gaiman, Audrey Niffenegger, J.K. Rowling, and other contemporary masters of supernatural fiction. In her masterpiece, The Bloody Chamber--which includes the story that is the basis of Neil Jordan's 1984 movie The Company of Wolves--she breathed new life into familiar fairy tales and legends in a style steeped in the romantic trappings of the gothic tradition. This edition features a new introduction by Kelly Link, the Nebula and World Fantasy Award-wining author, one of a new generation of writers who've been inspired by Carter's brand of fantastical, subversive, boundlessly imaginative fiction. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators"-- Provided by publisher.

the bloody chamber submitted by qmomo on July 2, 2019, 4:51pm angela carter's fascinating retellings of fairy tales explore the nature of relationships and desire through a variety of facets. there's plenty of darkness in the tales, some skew toward gothic horror. kelly link, an excellent short story author herself, provides a perceptive introduction.

Brilliance and Charm: Most Notable Work of Angela Carter

Carter drew from a diverse range of themes and influences and became one of the most widely studied British fiction writers.
The Bloody Chamber is her most significant work. It's a sensual, erotic re-imagination of classic European fairy tales (Snow White, Red Riding Hood, and Beauty (of "Beauty and the Beast"). A girl attacked by a wolf can love the wolf or even become a wolf herself; the beauty can be beastly, too.
A feminist work of genius, female agency saves the day in a number of the stories.
The Bloody Chamber was eventually adapted for radio, and then film.
