A Madcap Thanksgiving submitted by Meginator on June 29, 2023, 11:14am This is a delightful picture book depicting a lovely, and slightly chaotic, Thanksgiving celebration that emphasizes friendship and fun. Duck and Hippo appear to be a slightly mismatched odd couple, yet they embrace each other’s personality quirks and come together to invite their friends to (what Hippo intends to be) a good old-fashioned Thanksgiving celebration. While I expected the book to concentrate more on things inevitably going hilariously awry than the pair’s preparation and later resolution, its gentle moral message about embracing uniqueness works well as written, its madcap antics occurring at other points in the story in a way that allows the Thanksgiving celebration itself to simply be a congenial gathering of friends. The illustrations serve the story well, with a cartoonish character style that plays up their differences and allows for nice little snippets of humorous action along with broader spreads. A few moments made me laugh out loud while reading this (otherwise) silently to myself, and I enjoyed the book’s sense of warmth and its heartfelt emphasis on friendship. This is a charming book that gets the most from its solid cast of characters and successfully integrates a few well-placed gags with its somewhat sentimental, yet still effective, plot.
